Subconjunctival hemorrhage
« Reply #1 on: July 14, 2011, 09:09:50 AM »

Q: Yesterday I looked in the mirror and there was a large blood spot on the white of my eye. I don't know what caused it, as I didn't poke it or scratch it. My eye doesn't hurt, but should I be concerned? Or is this just a freak occurrence?
A: This sounds like a small subconjunctival hemorrhage. This is a tiny eye surface capillary which breaks and allows a drop or two of blood to leak under the membrane which covers the eye. In almost all cases, it is harmless and clears rapidly. Most instances are spontaneous. Occasionally a history of aspirin use or sneezing or coughing is obtained.
